How to Build a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

If you’re living in the big city, you understand the struggles of limited closet space and the importance of wearing every piece in your wardrobe in multiple ways. Building a sustainable capsule wardrobe is the key to never worrying about having “nothing to wear.” When you only own timeless pieces that can be transitioned from one season to the next, your closet can finally remain organized and clutter-free. Keep reading to find out the pieces you need to build the perfect minimalist collection you need this winter season.

Long-Sleeve Crewneck

Switch out your summer tees for some long-sleeve crewnecks. These can be worn as an undershirt when you’re layering or tucked into your favorite pair of trousers. You can get them in white, black, grey, and beige to easily mix and match.

Basic Turtleneck

Another long-sleeve essential but with extra detail, a basic turtleneck helps you create more stylish looks when you want a turtleneck to peek out of your outfit. You can find this in brown or orange for a little pop of color under your outerwear or other heavier pieces.

Oversized Sweater

This is your go-to on a chilly day. Layer this over a lightweight long-sleeve and pair it with a floral maxi skirt and chunky boots for a flirty look. While neutral shades such as cream and grey are important, feel free to find one in baby pink or lavender for when you want to stand out.

Knit Dress

You can opt for a short-sleeve or long-sleeve one depending on your preference. Either way, a knit dress can be styled with a shirt underneath and knee-high boots when you want to dress to impress without feeling restricted.

Chunky Knit Cardigan

An essential in beige and light grey, an oversized cardigan is a must-have. You can layer it over other neutral knits or jazz it up with some patterned pants. Tip: If you have a chunky cardigan on top, stick to a slimmer silhouette on the bottom (in other words, avoid layering over baggy jeans).

A classic wool blazer is perfect for a more elevated look. It is great for a more formal occasion but can also be dressed down with loose jeans for a more casual and edgy look.

Long Wool Coat

There is nothing classier than a well-tailored long wool coat. Timeless and elegant, a wool coat will ensure that your final look is structured and polished.

Puffer Jacket

Sometimes it all boils down to comfort and convenience. A good puffer jacket can keep you warm while making a statement. Find one that is windproof, water-resistant, and well-insulated for the perfect solution to a snowy day. This is also a necessary wardrobe item if you love outdoor adventures.

Straight-Leg Denim

If you want clean-cut denim, this is the perfect pair for you. Straight-leg denim is extremely versatile and provides a comfortable fit while elongating your legs. Having a dark wash and light wash denim opens up all your styling options when you mix and match.

Leather Pants

If you’re going for something fancier but still casual, a pair of leather pants will spruce up your look. For a casual look, style it with an oversized sweater and some sneakers. To dress it up, wear it with a structured blazer and throw on your favorite black heels.

A pair of trousers that have a slim fit in the waist and a relaxed fit in the leg will be perfect for giving you some shape while leaving plenty of room for movement. A high-rise pant with a pleated front and side pockets can be worn as a business casual outfit or a model-off-duty look.
